Every 365 days, give or take a few, people get the chance to do something spectacular: they have the opportunity to reinvent themselves and make the coming year better than the previous one. It's strange, really. We choose one special day, January 1st, to right wrongs and make goals of improvement for the year to come. Gym memberships are bought, resolutions are written, and after consuming large amounts of alcohol, the new year begins to seem pretty dandy.
If there was ever a "do over" button on life, it seems to be present during the switch between December 31st and January 1st, or so we like to think. In that one quick tick of the clock, all seems possible and most people are left feeling an above average level of hope.
Perhaps it's for the better. Everyone needs something to believe in, and January 1st appears to be that something. Of course, there's nothing "magical" about the turning of one year and the beginning of the next. But there's seems to be a common belief that anything vowed on that day is bound to have some substance at least. We like to think that we can reinvent ourselves and vow to do things differently "this year" and that it will happen. For some, maybe it does. But for others, unfortunately, it later becomes just another day in history. A day that was full of hope but ended up lacking results.
Disappointment.
